At Home Date Night

TJ and I don't get out much. It isn't because we don't want to--trust me, we want to--it's just that we don't have family close by to watch our kids for free and babysitters make a killing these days! (Plus, we can only ask our non-parent friends so many times before we start to feel bad that we can't watch their kids for them, too.) So we improvise and have dates at home. I'm not sure most people would call them dates, but we take what we can get and call fun nights at home dates.

Now that it's summer it's bags season--or "cornhole" for you weirdos who insist on calling it that (is that a geographic thing?). Most of the time--read 99% of the time--I sit on the sidelines entertaining children while other adults have fun playing bags, but every once in a while TJ and I make time to play together, just us, and it's a little at home date night.
TJ just added that little area for the grill and smoker and I swear
it's opened things up so much it feels like a new backyard!
The nights that it feels most like a date night are when we make dinner together. We prefer something on the grill so the kitchen doesn't turn into a mess. Also, I don't man the grill, so less work for me. Haha. After dinner we get the kids occupied doing something that won't require us to stop every 3 minutes. Usually for Liam this means setting up his mini boards. We actually had a friend make a kid sized version for him so he would quit walking on the boards during games and/or wanting to be held by TJ while playing. They're so cute and the kids love them. We set Emery up on a blanket with a few toys and then I make some drinks while TJ sets up the boards and turns on Dierks Bentley.

My current signature cocktail is a Moscow Mule. They're light and refreshing and seriously way too good for my own good--aka they go down wayyy too easily. Here's what you need:
  • limes
  • mint leaves
  • vodka
  • ginger beer
  • ice
  • & TJ swears you need a copper mug
Squeeze the juice of 1 lime into a copper mug (TJ swears the mug is necessary, but I'm not so sure. I just like the handle) and add a few mint leaves. Muddle. Add ice, 2 ounces of vodka, and 4 ounces of ginger beer. Drink. It's amazing.
Some nights we just have a couple beers instead. Then we play a few games of bags. I'm not going to lie, I almost always lose. I'm not that bad, TJ is just better. It's just fun to do something with TJ while Liam runs around and Emery eats grass plays.

I know this may not sound super date night-y if you don't have kids, but trust me, if everything actually works out they way it's supposed to it's just as much fun.

What do you do for at home date nights?
